Deck Finishing
Deck
finishes can be selected in water repellent, semi-transparent, film
forming, or penetrating types. The conditions that will affect the deck
should be taken into consideration prior to selecting the deck finish
that is appropriate for you. Weather, traffic, swimming pools and pets
can be just a few of the elements that can affect the deck finish .
Film
forming deck finishes are generally considered paints and should not
be used on decks that are exposed to any form of weather because the
deck finish will tend to crack and cause decay over time.
By
comparison, penetrating deck finishes are the most effective for today's
decks because the finish penetrates the wood, creating a protective
bond beneath the wood that repels water and the elements. Penetrating
deck finishes also prevent premature decay of the wood, and ensure that
the structure can be enjoyed for many years.
Water
repellent preservative deck finishes are considered effective for short-term
coating of a deck that is exposed to the inclement elements consistently.
These deck finishes contain a mildewcide that prevents mildew and decay
of the wood, although this type of treatment is not beneficial for decay
prevention over the long term.
Finally,
semi-transparent stains add a color to the wood, while at the same time
allowing the wood tones to remain evident in the finished product. This
type of deck finish can be found in either latex or oil, yet, because
they contain a small degree of paint they do not last as long as penetrating
deck finishes.
